Conor Bowen, former YAPPER now studying Ancient History at Hampshire College

Conor Bowen

Manchester Summer Work & Learn
YAP Year: 2011

Where is he now:

2013: Completing his freshman year at Hampshire College, studying ancient history with a specific interest in the Neolithic Era.

In his own words:

“My experience at college has been very rewarding. It’s given me a sense of purpose and respect that I never felt in high school. It’s very exciting to me to be a part of academia. Since I started college, I believe that my intellectual, cultural, and emotional horizons have broadened immensely over such a small amount of time.

“What surprised me most about college was the attitudes of the students compared to my high school experience. College students are far more engaged, productive, and enthusiastic about their school and their classes. For me, it makes a world of difference walking into a classroom of students who are excited to learn, as opposed to my high school classes in which both the students and the teachers seemed disinterested.”

His YAP experience:

“The thing that I remember most fondly about my YAP experience is that the Tutorial Center not only gave me a chance, but really believed in my ability to succeed during a time when a lot of my friends and my family thought that I had made the wrong decision to leave high school. I encountered a lot of criticism for my choices back then, but the Tutorial Center and the YAP program always had my back and pushed me to keep on fighting.”
