A Graduating Student Reflects

“My time at the Tutorial Center was a great and challenging one.  I put in a lot of work and had many struggles…. With hard work, dedication, applying myself, and tons of help I achieved my goal of obtaining my diploma. Learning all the things I needed to get my diploma was an enriching and interesting experience.  The Tutorial center has armed me with the tools I need to enter the working world, and I am grateful to The Tutorial Center. With the same hard work and determination you too can achieve your goals, whether it’s your diploma or job, the Tutorial Center can help you carpe diem, seize the day.”

High School Completion Program Student, and Valedictorian?

Lexi Federhen Shines even brighter with the help of The Tutorial CenterTutorial Center’s High School Completion Student Vies to Add Valedictorian to Her Accomplishments

With just a few weeks left in her senior year, our High School Completion student Lexie Federhen is hoping to add one more laurel to her high school achievements: valedictorian of Mt. Anthony Union High School in Bennington!

Lexie Federen received the Prudential Award

Lexie receives the Prudential Spirit of Community Award as the Vermont State Winner from Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts.

Already recipient this year of the Gates Millennium Scholar 2015 national award, the Horatio Algier 2015 National Scholar award, the national President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence, the Presidential Spirit of Community Vermont state award – and crowned Vermont’s Miss Outstanding Teen in 2014 –  Lexie will be going on to Cornell University this summer.

But before that, she’s hoping for one final high school achievement. Currently #2 in her graduating class, Lexie wonders if her extra-strong effort this semester will leap-frog her to valedictorian status.

SAT Prep tutoring

Jess Dubie helps Lexie learn how to tackle the SAT exam.

Lexie has been attending The Tutorial Center part-time within the High School Completion program for two years, receiving individualized tutoring designed to enable her to deal with her cross-dominance reading disability.

In the regular high school setting, Lexie found her reading disability made it very hard for her to perform as well in classes as she was capable. But at The Tutorial Center, her tutors have helped her develop effective strategies for reading and processing information that have enabled her to excel and demonstrate her real abilities.

Here Lexie talks about her experience:

In addition, being able to schedule sessions flexibly with The Tutorial Center’s Spanish teacher, Lexie has had the opportunity to complete coursework in Spanish that she could not otherwise get into her high school schedule.

As Lexie puts it, “I give an overall score of A+ to both The Tutorial Center and their tutors for helping me be successful!”

Lexie Federhen 2015 Salutatorian Moutn Anthony Union High SchoolWe applaud Lexie’s accomplishments and the committed support of her tutors Jess Dubie and Manuel Noguera. Lexie is another example of our ability to meet the needs of a huge range of students. We’ll let you know whether Lexie makes it to valedictorian, though we don’t know how we could be more proud of her than we already are.

GRADUATION UPDATE: Lexie was honored as The 2015 Salutatorian! An outstanding accomplishment that we’re all celebrating!

High School Completion Graduate

Desiree Graduates!

High School Completion GraduateDesiree came to us hoping to earn her high school diploma.  Just 17, Desiree had moved around a bit but returned to our area hungry to wrap up her high school requirements.  Instead of re-enrolling in the local high school, she enrolled in our Adult Education program and began Vermont’s proficiency-based High School Completion Program here at The Tutorial Center.  Almost one year to the day, Desiree put the final touches on her last requirements and completed her program.

Desiree has been accepted at The Conservatory of Recording, Arts and Sciences (CRAS) in Tempe’, AZ.  She plans to begin her studies there in April 2015 majoring in Communication and Sound Engineering.

We’re all so proud of her achievements! Listen to her piece You and I which was part of her final for her Music Theory studies.

Tutorial Center Students Featured on World Education Website

Sometimes it’s easy for us to view the work we do as just another day at The Tutorial Center. But sometimes others remind us of the impact we regularly have on the people we serve.

Former YAP! (Youth Agriculture Project) crew members Elyse Hardy and Renette Gonzalez were both featured in the September issue of New England Literacy Resource Center’s magazine The Change Agent. It was the magazine’s “food issue.” Renette and Elyse each wrote about their personal experiences in YAP!, sharing how the program helped them achieve success in the working world.

Parts of their stories were more recently included in World Education’s October Newsletter. World Education is a widely-known and well respected global organization whose mission is to raise the quality of lives through education. Tackling such important topics as HIV, poverty, literacy, the organization does on a global scale what we at The Tutorial Center do in our part of the planet. We’re proud and pleased to be included in their network.
