And, we try to pass that idea of community service on to our students, sometimes as an element of their personalized education plan. It works.

Meet Dillon, an alternative high school education student, who was just recognized as a valuable volunteer by the Manchester Community Food Cupboard. We love that our students can work on personal development during their time with us and and help important organizations like The Community Food Cupboard continue its important work.

From the Community Food Cupboard Newsletter:

“Dillon Williams has been one of CFC’s most faithful volutheers for more than a year. Dillon is a student at The Tutorial Center and their Smokey House site in Danby, both of which have a strong focus on experiential learning and individualized instruction.

“He comes to work at CFC each Thursday moming with his instructor Jen Lalor and he is always ready to tackle whatever task needs doing. On a typical day, he can be seen stacking shelves, filling bags for the homebound, sorting produce, carrying and breaking down cardboand boxes, and much more.

“Dillon’s work here is not just an asset for CFC, it’s a. a valuable part of his school day, which provides real-world experience. During the past two summers, he has also worked in the Youth Agriculture Project in Manchester that teaches young adults how to grow and maintain an organic vegetable garden through sustainable methods, and he currently volun-teers at the Manchester Community Library as well.

“Dillon is a valued member of each of these communities and hopes to takes classes next year toward a computer science degree. Thank you, Dillon for all your hard work!”

We’re Joining the Revolution!

IMG_1525Actually we’ve been a leader in this movement! But on May 15th we’re amping up our rally cry in support of Chef Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day – a global push to make food education a part of everyday school curriculum world-wide. Over 750,000 people have already signed the petition urging this important change!

Food and agriculture have long been part of our work with students—evidenced by our popular YAP! program and the way TTC at Smokey House includes cooking as part of YouthWork & Learn’s alternative school program. We understand that arming people with familiarity with good, whole foods can make all the difference in our students’ and staff’s well-being. Better food choices mean less childhood obesity, reduced diet-related disease and improved overall health for every body.

FFood Revolution Tutorial Center Students Cooking at TTC-9548or Food Revolution Day our centers will be featuring special cooking sessions using recipes from our newly published e-book, Garden Candy Basics. Instructors will be engaging students of all ages including those in adult education and ESL classes.

Vegetable pizzas, blended tomatoes on rustic bread, and spiralized veggie salads are a few easy, affordable and delicious dishes they’ll be creating and enjoying—reinforcing the idea that healthy choices benefit both the individual and the community.

Juanita Burch-Clay, YouthWork & Learn coordinator at our program at Smokey House, tells us “Many times the students have said they thought they didn’t like something, but they like what we made. I guide us to meals that are healthy, tasty, relatively inexpensive, and easy to make at home. These are survival skills they’re learning.”

Survival indeed! Let’s make fresh food and better eating an everyday movement! Let’s be revolutionary! Make Lucas’ Chicken Cordon Bleu!

Become WFA Certified

For the second year, we’re running two sessions of SOLO Wilderness First Aid at the end of February. This is a 2-day, 16-hour course that can result in a two year WFA certification. It’s a great course for anyone active in the outdoors and/or working with groups of students or adults.

Thursday-Friday Program
February 26-27, 2015

This session is intended for high school students and adults and runs from 9:30-5:30 each day. It is open to the community for a fee of $205. YouthWork & Learn students take the course without extra fee as part of their program.

Saturday-Sunday Program
Feb. 28 – Mar. 1, 2015

This session is open to the community and runs from 8:30-4:30 each day. The fee of $205 covers instruction, book, and lunches. For more information about the course content, see the SOLO website

Winning the Race to Success

We teach all of our students that success is rarely reached by a sprint, it’s more of a cross-country run. That’s why we introduce them to three supportive running companions: Pace, Perseverance, and Patience. 

By training with this important trio students learn how to set attainable goals, manage expectations, and achieve their dreams. 

Let’s face it, the beginning of every new endeavor is fun. When you start out on a project—any project—like returning to school or renovating the bathroom, it’s easy to confuse excitement for momentum.  It’s after you’ve been at it a while and the scenery doesn’t seem to be changing that it’s easy to lose motivation. That’s when it’s good to call on the Triplets for help.

Pace will happily remind you that you’ll get there as long as you don’t try to go too far too fast. Getting ahead and getting ahead of yourself are not the same things. Divide a long journey into smaller manageable lengths and before you know it there will be more work behind you than ahead of you and you’ll cross that finish line.

Accept that the road to success is a hilly, winding one. Perseverance steps up when you feel like you need to rest, or worse, you want to quit. Perseverance gets you around the obstacles in your path and helps you believe in the great things ahead even when you can’t see around the next corner.

Patience is the one who will offer a refreshing cup of self-confidence when you feel like you need to walk for a stretch to catch your breath, or because your shoe’s become untied. When the goal seems so far down the road—so far into the future—Patience will assure you that it will happen. So relax. It may take longer than you hoped—but you’ll get there.

Science Fridays and Good Cooking

What’s new at YouthWork&Learn at Smokey House? Our schedule this year includes science activities in the morning, followed by lunch with home-made dishes using vegetables and herbs from our garden.

IMG_1517 For science, we started with a field study where the students compared and contrasted seeds from native Vermont plants.Our second focus was current electricity, including experiments with batteries, light bulbs, wire, and measurement, with emphasis on photovoltaic (PV) energy. IMG_1487Our life science strand provided students an opportunity to observe behaviors within a population of Tenebrio beetles (mealworms) during their four stage metamorphic cycle.  Students are monitoring these cycles and experimenting with the effects of light and darkness on the beetles. In the kitcheIMG_1715n this fall we’ve made:  pesto, caprese salad, pizza, hummos, tabbouleh, lentil-rice soup, tomato sauce, apple butter, cider, leek and potato soup, focaccia, frittatas, oven-roasted potatoes with scrambled eggs, pumpkin bread, apple crisp, chili, cornbread, and apple cake.  Yum!
